This is our last paper issue, folks. As we move forward into newer forms of communication, we have decided to no longer publish a paper newsletter. We feel we can use the resources used to produce the newsletter more effectively to engage mountain bikers in advocacy, work with land managers and bike shop staff. We have recently rolled out a new web site, which will allow us to do a better job of putting news on our site and posting these messages through various channels such as facebook and email. We hope to drive more traffic to our site and start a discussion of important advocacy issues there. You can find us at romp.org, and can subscribe to our e-newsletter at romp.org/contact/

ECdM trail update

The new staging area at El Corte de Madera OSP is not open yet due to drainage issues identified during the December storms. No time estimate yet for opening the area – they’re looking into various solutions, hoping to have some options over the next few weeks.

It will be SO great to have that parking lot finished and open… much needed. The project includes a new trail segment that will connect the staging area with the rest of the ECdM trail system.

Action Link – State Park funding

The California State Parks Foundation requests our assistance in urging the Legislature and governor to allocate the recently-identified State Park and Recreation Funds (SPRF) revenues back into our state park system.

Despite recent statements from the governor, they are concerned that it is not a done deal that the Legislature intends to allocate the $20.3 million in State Park and Recreation Fund (SPRF) revenues back into the state park system. They are concerned that legislators may feel tempted to put those funds elsewhere, or claim to put them into state parks but simply reduce the park system’s General Fund allocation at the same time.

The Legislature wraps up in roughly 3 weeks, and these decisions will be made quickly. The following link is available for sending input to legislators:

ROMP member aiming for speed record attempt, running the Tahoe Rim Trail

He’s running – not mountain biking – but longtime ROMP member Gary Gellin is attempting to set a new record on the 165+ mile Tahoe Rim Trail, starting Monday 8/13. 28,000 feet of climbing, all at altitudes above 6200′. Standing record is 38 hours, 32 minutes.

Update, 8/16: Gary went 80 miles before stopping due to a knee injury – great accomplishment!!!

May “Monthly ROMP” @Coe = cool, breezy fun!

On Saturday 5/26, ROMP hosted our monthly all-level ride at Henry Coe State Park…where approximately 30 riders enjoyed the singletrack, views, and cool weather — really great for climbing up the Jim Donnelly trail to the ridge! We split into three groups, rode until a little past noon, and gathered back at the trailhead for snacks afterward. Good times!
