Soquel Demo Forest HIHNS MILL ROAD CLOSED!
Posted by: Josh on Wednesday, June 16, 2010 - 09:56 AM PST
Access Alerts We received the following notice from Ed Orre, Assistant Forest Manager of Soquel Demonstration State Forest:

As many of you know, the parking lot for Soquel Demonstration State Forest and about 0.5 miles of the top of Hihn's Mill Road is located on land owned by Roger Burch and managed by Redwood Empire Sawmills.

Redwood Empire is currently logging the Burch property in this area. You probably saw some of their loggers camped in the parking lot. I'm not sure how long their operation will last but it could be several more months. Our parking lot is their log landing. We were just advised that they plan to work along Hihn's Mill Road for the next few days. They will be falling timber along the road and yarding (dragging) logs to the nearest landing. This means that .....

Hihn's Mill Road through their property will be closed until further notice.
This includes the bridge, parking lot and about 0.5 miles of road.

Keep out: By closing its parks, California is killing an economic engine
Posted by: Josh on Tuesday, September 15, 2009 - 08:26 PM PST
Access Alerts From Santa Rosa Press Democrat: by Christa Jeremiason

From foggy Del Norte Coast Redwoods to sun-splashed South Carlsbad State Beach, nearly every state park (was packed Labor Day.)
For many families, the parks offer an affordable vacation in times of economic uncertainty. They're safe, accessible outlets for recreation, repositories of history and culture, reflections of California's grandeur. About 75 million people visit state parks annually, and they generate billions of dollars of economic activity.
And, inexplicably, they're endangered.
Beginning in the next week or two, the state will begin closing as many as 100 parks because shortsighted, feckless officials are unwilling to save them. The closures could ultimately cover almost half of the state park system.
The savings: $14 million.

Solving Californias Economic Drought
Posted by: Josh on Monday, June 15, 2009 - 11:28 AM PST
Access Alerts This afternoon held some “good news, bad news” for California’s state park system.

The bad news first – the Legislature’s Budget Conference Committee voted to adopt the Governor’s proposal to eliminate core, state funding for our state parks. But the good news - and it’s good!- is that the committee also voted to enact the State Park Access Pass, CSPF’s proposal from last year to institute a surcharge on vehicle license fees of non-commercial vehicles, in order to provide Californians with free day-use access to state parks and generate much-needed revenues for the system. The version adopted by the Budget Conference Committee today differs from last year’s proposal in that today’s action adopted a $15 fee, in order to gain permanent General Fund savings of approximately $143 million annually. In exchange for paying the fee, residents driving into state parks with a California license plate would receive free day-use entrance into state parks.

This is good news, but it's only one step toward a final budget victory. Since the vote was divided, this proposal still has a high hurdle to overcome, in order to be enacted. Please TAKE ACTION and send a message to your legislator supporting the State Park Access Pass and urging the Legislature to Save Our State Parks!

TAKE ACTION
