Mountain Cyclist September-October 2001
Club News
ROMP's member picnic will be held on Sunday, Sept. 15 at 12 PM at Stevens Creek County Park (adjacent to Fremont Older Open Space Preserve). All ROMP members and other interested bikers and friends are invited to join in an afternoon of socialization and fun. Rides of varying levels will be held in the morning, schwag will be given away, and a barbecue lunch will be catered.
Cost of the picnic is $5 for members, $10 for non-members, and $3 for kids. To get to the park, take I-280 to the Foothill Expressway/Boulevard exit. Head south on Foothill, continuing past Steven's Creek Boulevard onto Steven's Canyon Road. The park will be on your left. After entering the park, drive past the first left (the main parking lot) and take the second left. Drive up this road to the Villa Maria group picnic area. Parking will be on the right. More directions and a map are available at the Santa Clara County Parks website. Check the Ride List for time, description and meeting place for the pre-picnic rides.
The picnic is a great place to chat with some of those folks you may have met on a ride but were panting too much to talk to, so come out and join the fun!

ROMP will be sponsoring a talk by Marla Streb in October. This is anticipated to be a packed house, so stay tuned to the ROMP website for coming details.
Marla was a World Championship Medalist in 2000 and has 3 Career NCS DH Victories. Bike.com published the following bio of Marla Streb.
Bio: Marla Streb
Professional downhill mountain biker, former lab researcher and all-around smartypants.
IN HER OWN WORDS: Until the belated arrival of my breasts, I slipped through life without making much of a stir. When I was a child I was too shy to smile for photographs, so my mother no longer bothered. Then in high school, I ruined the yearly mandatory photographs by stylishly cutting my own hair. So, there is not much in the way of photographic documentation until the spring break of my sophomore year in college (I bought all the negatives).
After 18 years of obedience training in Maryland Catholic schools, I earned a master's degree in marine biology in the hopes of becoming, well, self-sufficient while saving the planet. I quickly discovered that humans just allocate money to save other humans, not the rest of the world. Disillusioned, I droned in the regular jobs of cytogenetics, pathology, and neuropharmacology. And other stuff.
Sure, I had been a bike messenger/accident victim during grad school, but I didn't really discover mountain biking until the age of 28 when I started commuting to my AIDS research job at the Scripps Institute in La Jolla, California. I took the wooded, not very direct route. Finally in this sport, I could get my daily fix of opiate derivatives, throw off my labcoat and bask in the glow of being the only girl on the group trail rides. And, somehow, mountain biking made me feel like I was at least not harming the environment. It was good, then got weird, then I turned pro. This will be my third season with Team Yeti.
After all these years of racing I no longer photograph like I did as a sophomore. I'm now 34, and in a few years, my boyfriend and I intend a circumnavigation of the world on our sailboat, voyaging to those places that remain and riding those trails that haven't been paved. Stark naked, but not mad. I'll still race internationally while sending bike.com reports. With luck, I'll still be getting away with it.

ROMP will hold elections for all board positions during the October club meeting. Please come out and vote, or, even better, run for a position. Positions to be voted on include president, vice president, secretary, treasurer, membership director, public relations director, and social director. Monthly meetings are where the vast majority of ROMP business is conducted, including policy development issues, budgets, and cyclist education. All meetings are open to members and non-members alike. Please stop by to see what we are doing and to participate in the local biking community. The meetings occur at 7 PM on the fourth Monday of each month (except December) at the Cupertino Library Community Room, located at 10400 Torre Ave in Cupertino. Exit 280 at De Anza Blvd/Sunnyvale-Saratoga Road and head south. Cross Stevens Creek and turn left onto Town Center Lane. Turn right onto Torre, and the entrance to the parking lot is half way down the block on your left. As you approach the Library, walk down the ramp to your left to reach the meeting room - do not go through the library. More directions and a map can be found on the ROMP website here.
Note: The September, 2001 meeting will be held in the meeting room at the REI in San Jose. This REI is located at 400 El Paseo de Saratoga, near the intersection of Saratoga Ave. and Lawrence Expwy./Quito Rd. Inquire at the greeter desk for directions to the meeting room.

When: Saturday and Sunday September 22nd-23rd
Where: Donner Lake Rim trail
How: Contact Jim Sullivan at volunteer@romp.org for carpool & lodging info.
ROMP Riders,
Here is our chance to help with the Donner Lake Rim Trail construction. On Saturday, we'll be donning work gloves to chip away at some of the unfinished segments of this shared use trail above beautiful Donner Lake. On Sunday, we'll head out for a guaranteed good time riding with the ol’ trails dawg himself, Berry "the Granite Gondolier" Stevens. We will take the opportunity to ride the famous "Hole in the Ground" trail. Why do they call it Hole in the Ground, you ask? Well come up and see for yourself. There will be carpools leaving Friday night, and some have expressed interest in leaving early Saturday morning. It is your choice. If you wish to join us Friday night, we will be staying at Margaret and Rowan Bouttell's Viking' ski club lodge for $10.00$ a night. This cabin is opposite Donner ski ranch, and comfortably sleeps 20+, so slot in soon, as these beds will likely fill up fast! Their phone number and email is 650-390-9366, the.bouttells@prodigy.net.
NOW is the time to log your volunteer hours !! This workday will qualify you for some of the fabulous stuff to be given away at the ROMP picnic the weekend before (September 15th – see article). Great stuff like a Schwinn mountain bike, Ritchey parts galore, tires, Ned Overend signed me morabilia, and more!! Just let me know if you plan on being there, so I can add your name to the drawing pool.
We need to get bodies up there and show our support for this mountain bike friendly trail. A little time spent now, will go a long way later!

Fellow Dirt Movers,
This late in the summer I know many of you are experiencing withdrawal and are looking forward to Trail Work Season. Well, GOOD NEWS! It's here! There is a project you can participate in to work off your pent-up need which offers a day of trail work followed by a ride, so fun is on the agenda too!
The project is in Downieville, October 13-14, to extend the North Yuba Trail from Downieville down to Goodyear's Bar. ROMP had at least a dozen dedicated folks turn out for this work day last year and we hope to do at least that well this year. Same deal, do trail work on Saturday for 4-5 hours then enjoy free beer 'till the keg is dry, dip in the river and kick back. Sunday I'll lead a ride on a trail none of you have ever ridden, the Bunker Hill Trail. It drops off the Chimney Rock Trail, descends sharply on singletrack for several miles, then joins the Downie River Trail in the middle of the singletrack, for more fun. I was planning a slow ride up Saddleback Fireroad to the 'B' Tree to get there, but if enough of you want to shuttle, let me know and I'll arrange it. I will also facilitate reserving motel rooms, tho every one will have to pay there own way on that. So fill up my in-box with your eager replies and I'll sign you up; let's get some dirt on those ROMP trail tools!
The hours you commit are also eligible for the volunteer appreciation drawing at the ROMP Picnic on September 15th. The stack of GREAT bike stuff keeps getting bigger, and your odds are real good right now. If you don't have any hours to report, this will be your last chance to get in on this years drawing.

Cyclists, we have two positions open on the ROMP board :
- Public Relations Director - interested in communications or marketing? This is a chance to help ROMP get its message out through local media. Experience not required, but enthusiasm is a must!
- Swap Meet Coordinator - our swap meet is our biggest fund raiser each year. Because this event is so important, we are creating a new position to focus on making it a success. Interest in organizing events is the main requirement here.
Both of these positions are a great way to help mountain biking, learn more about
ROMP, and get involved. Please contact me if you are interested or have any questions.
Thanks,
Rod Brown

... by Jim Sullivan, ROMP Volunteer Coordinator
This year the ROMP board has put together a volunteer incentive program that enters you to win great stuff from our sponsors. It is a cumulative program; for every documented hour you spend volunteering as a ROMP member for mountain bike related activities, you will get one raffle ticket credited in your name.
Volunteer activities include trail work, attending qualified meetings, the ROMP swap meet, etc.. Your tickets will accumulate throughout the summer and will then be entered in a bingo roller at the ROMP social picnic Sept.15 (see article on page 3). We will draw from the pot of names to give away GREAT bicycle related stuff.
Pick up some classy NEW stuff like: a Schwinn 19' MESA 24 spd mt bike (value 800.$), SHIMANO XT 8-9 speed wheelset, a complete SRAM 9.0 Powerglide shifting system, tires, tires, tires, mountain bike memorabilia (new, never worn, national team clothing), Ritchey NCS headsets, clothing from ODLO, and more. Did I mention tires? Also, two Specialized world Champion Jersey's and 2 cycling books, all signed by Ned Overend !
Fill out the volunteer hours form on the the ROMP web page and send it to: volunteer@romp.org. Hours will be accumulated retroactively beginning in January of 2001.
