Join the Ongoing Trail Work at Arastradero

Trail work is winding down in MROSD lands for the summer and will not pick up again until fall; however, Bay Area Action, stewards for Palo Alto's Arastradero Preserve, is still leading regular workdays throughout the summer. The group meets the second and fourth Saturday of every month from 9 AM to 1 PM from May through September and from 10 AM to 2 PM from October through April. During daylight savings time, the group also holds work parties every Wednesday evening from 6 PM to dusk. Meet in the preserve parking lot if you would like to help. Tools and gloves are provided; please bring water, layered clothing, and lunch or snacks.

If you have any questions about these workdays, contact the Saturday coordinator, Karen Cotter, at kcotter@sprynet.com or 650-329-8544, or the Wednesday coordinator, Miles Hopkins, at milesh1@ix.netcom.com or 650-368-5124.

Santa Clara Co. Parks Need Volunteers

Santa Clara County Parks are looking for volunteers to help with volunteer patrols and other activities, not just at Almaden Quicksilver, but at all its parks, including favorites for riders such as Steven's Canyon and Grant Ranch. The parks' semiannual Trailwatch Academy begins this month, so now is a good time to get involved. For general activities, the volunteer coordinating council meets the second Tuesday of each month at Hellyer Park. For more information, contact John Heenan, volunteer coordinator, at 408-354-6583 or parkinfo@gwgate.prk.co.santa-clara.ca.us or visit the parks' volunteer page.

Help Build Bikes for Needy Kids

The Mountain View Community Services Agency sponsors a bike repair and donation program for needy families. Volunteers are needed to repair or assist with repairing bicycles. The volunteer and donation days currently scheduled are July 10, August 7, and September 11 from 9 AM to 1 PM; and October 9, November 6, November 20, December 11, and December 18 from 10 AM to 2 PM. The location for these events is 2566 Leghorn St., west of US 101 between San Antonio and Rengstorff, behind Pedro's Auto Clinic.

What To Bring

Please bring a sack of goodies consisting of tools, steel wool, degreaser, lube, gloves, rags, etc. Also, children's bikes, extra parts, rags, storage bins for parts, disposable gloves, lube are happily accepted. Parts such as small tubes (12.5-inch, 16-inch and 20-inch), tires (all sizes), handlebar grips and tape, seats, cables and cable housing, and other consumable items are always in short supply.

Bicycle Donations

To donate a bike on a weekend, bring it to the workday. Weekdays, contact the Mountain View Community Service Agency, 204 Stierlin Road, 650-968-0836. Donations can be made 9:30 AM – 12:30 PM and 1:30 PM – 4:30 PM.

This program specializes in children's bicycles. Adult size bikes are not accepted unless they are in exceptionally good condition and space is available to store them. A limited number of adult bikes are traded with local dealers in exchange for parts.

Junk bicycles can be donated if you bring them to a volunteer day and if you separate the metal for recycling. The program will supply tools and know-how, write a receipt, and salvage any usable parts.

For more information, contact Dave Fork at 650-390-0667 or fork@parc.xerox.com or visit http://www.wco.com/~jps//bikes/mvcsa.html.
